  1. What is a domain name transfer?
If you already have a domain name, it is very likely that your domain name is registered with some other Registrar, such as Network Solutions and you are most likely paying $35 to renew your domain every year. If you transfer your domain to our parent Registrar, who is a competitor of Network Solutions, you will enjoy significant savings on your domain name renewal, since it will cost you only $15 - not $35 to renew your doman name. Transfering your domain to us means that your domain will be moved from your existing registrar to OpenSRS/Tucows registrar.

  2. What does the $15.00 cover when I transfer my domain from other registrar?
Click here to do a look up on a domain name that you own (example abcdomain.com )
In the domain name record, you will find a line that says: Record expires on (date)
By transfering the domain name to our registrar for $15.00, that expiration date will be automatically extended by one more year. Subsequent year registrations/renewals will also be only $15.00

  3. How long does it take to transfer my domain?
Transfer completion usually takes several days. Keep checking Internic WHOIS for parent registrar on your domain - once TUCOWS appears as your Registrar, your domain has been safely transferred. The time limit for domain transfers is 9 days - so be sure to check on the 10th day from the time you initiate the transfer to assure your domain transferred with success. Back to Top

  4. Am I transfering my hosting as well?
No, everything on your domain name record will remain the same, including your current hosting company, DNS records. The only items that will change are: expiration date will be extended by one year and registrar will become Tucows Network.

If you wanted to move to another hosting company, or update your domain name records, you will be able to make changes to your domain name by using our management interface at: http://www.eyeondomain.com/manage_your_domains.html. Bear in mind you'll need your domain's username and password to make the desired changes. Be sure to explore the demo so you may appreciate how easy it is to manage your domain.

  5. Can you give me step by step description what happens when I apply for domain name transfer?
    1. Apply for transfer by completing form:

    2. You will receive 2 emails:
      • Step 1. One Email from Us Confirming we have processed your application.
      • Step 2. Second Email from OpenSRS/Tucows which will request you to go to the special web page and provide you with a SECRET CODE to finalize your domain name transfer. You must authorize the transfer in this final step, otherwise your transfer will not process. This second email is sent to an administrative contact email on your original domain name record. Be sure to check your domain name record now - click here and enter your domain name - look for ADMINISTRATIVE contact and verify the email on this contact is valid, current and yours! If the administrative contact email address is your web hosting company or someone else, either have it changed by them to your own email or make sure they will cooperate with you approving this process.
      • Step 3. After you have authenticated per step 2 request is sent to a loosing registrar. If it is Network Solutions or Register.Com - expect email from Network Solutions or Register.Com ALSO authenticating you as a domain owner, asking your to take action otherwise the domain transfer request would be declined by them
        1. NETWORK SOLUTIONS will send a short email asking you to hit REPLY to their message and copy one line of text into the subject. Requires domain owner to respond within 3 days - otherwise declines the transfer request.
        2. REGISTER.COM will send you a very long confusing email with lots of links - most of those links would be to Renew with Register.Com but the last link in their letter is actully the link to authenticate and approve the domain move away from them. Requires domain owner to respond within 3 days or declines the request.
      • Step 4. If all goes well, the loosing Registrar will release your domain - the time limit is 5 days for either releasing your domain. Some Registrars like Network Solutions will email you with final confirmation when your domain transfers out of their jurisdiction.
      • Step 5.
  6. Once Domain Transfer finalized by you, your Registrar is responsible for the actual transfer. They may take anywhere from one to several days, depending on their current procedures. If you check on your domain transfer in about 10 days from your transfer application, it should show one additional year added to the original expiration date, which is one way of telling your transfer is now completed and you may start using your control panel. The transfer application is initially reviewed by OpenSrs (about same business day).
Some reasons transfer may not be completed are:
    1. DOMAIN NAME IS NOT YET 60 DAYS OLD
    2. DOMAIN NAME IS ON HOLD BY A CURRENT REGISTRAR
    3. FOR NON PAYMENT
    4. DOMAIN NAME HOLD / IN DISPUTE PROCEEDINGS.

  7. What should I do first before I apply for my domain name transfer?
Make sure that email address on your current domain record is correct. One of the most common reasons for domain transfer to fail, is old or incorrect email address on administrative contact of your domain name with the current registrar. Please see paragraph above for more details.
